In Fall of 2020 I, Keilin Jeter, was a Midnight Yell Practice Assistant with Texas A&M University - Department of Student Activities - Campus Engagement and Traditions Team. The mission of the Department of Student Activities at Texas A&M is to "Foster and support leadership, learning, and involvement opportunities that enhance the growth and development of students  and recognized student organizations."

Intern Responsibilities

The goals for the Midnight Yell Practice Assistant is to:

  • Learn the mission and operations of the student affairs department 

  • Translate student learning and student development theory into practice in a reciprocal relationship between coursework and field-based experience

  • Develop a professional demeanor

  • Learn to appreciate a multicultural perspective and the value of diversity

  • Provide job services for the employing department

The only qualifications for earning the Midnight Yell Practice Assistant title is if you want to learn and grow in the events/student activities industry. The benefit of being the MYP Assistant is that you are able to network with individuals of higher rank within the university. Networking is a huge part of growing your name.

Specific Job Experiences 

  • Assistant in the organization and execution of Midnight Yell Practice (MYP)

  • Update and maintain risk management plan 

  • Manage and execute MYP staffing plans

  • Review program content 

  • Support General Texas Aggie Yell Leader Operations

  • Plan, coordinate and market execute MYP Marketing plans

  • Attend team and event meetings 

  • Other duties as assigned

Achievements

  • Created/prepared successful Midnight Yell Practices 

  • Hosted several large-scale events while going through a global pandemic

  • Learned how to communicate more thoroughly 

  • Knowing when to speak up and when to listen 

  • Always have fun 

  • Be quick on your toes 

  • Take initiative 

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions 

  • Be confident 

  • Development of teamwork 

  • How critical risk management is 

  • Always have a plan B, C or D 

  • When conflicts arise, staying calm is the best way to solve the situation
